September – Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide can impact any of our lives. Just this year 31-year old Nima Bhakta from California (of Indian-origin) died by suicide as a result of the postpartum depression she endured after giving birth to her infant. Garima Kathari (35) and Man Mohan Mall (37) a New Jersey couple also died due to a murder-suicide. Though details have not been shared, it seems the couple had financial stresses due to the pandemic. Garima was also pregnant.

Depression, stress, anger, hopelessness – these are feelings many people may go through, and left alone can progress to an individual contemplating or attempting suicide.

For Asian Americans

  • Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death
  • Second leading cause of death ages 15-34
  • Asian American college students more likely than White students to have suicidal thoughts / attempt suicide
  • Highest suicide rate among ALL females ages 65-84

Know the symptoms – and how to help. If you need help – you can call our 24/7 Crisis Line. You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 800-273-8255.
